If you know me well, you know I've been on a Jane Austen kick for the last, oh, I don't know, fifteen years. Trouble is, there's only six major novels. Intrepid authors rush in to take up the slack by writing sequels and prequels and other novels based on the characters of the real ones.

I tried reading The Independence of Miss Mary Bennett by Colleen McCullough (based on one of the minor characters in Pride and Prejudice) but it just clanged in my ears. The language of the book shifts too much between modern and 19th-century writing.

When McCullough (or her editor) didn't even bother with the distinction, now mostly gone, between shall and will, I tossed the book aside in disgust.

I'm still waiting for an author that can write in a style more Austen-tacious.

Anyway, I have another book that I'm looking forward to reading: The Ascent of Rum Doodle.

Wash your hands, people. If I see someone leaving a public bathroom without washing, I call them on it. Unless they look like they would beat me up for it.
