I will be moving into a new apartment starting the 22nd. So a-packing I will go. I have to be out of this one by the 31st.

The new apartment is back in the neighborhood Paco and I moved into when we came to Portland, the Hawthorne District. It's a one-bedroom apartment on the 2nd of 3 floors. I have a porch to put my plants on and to possibly let Helen the cat go out on. I have a gas stove. I have a teeny tiny kitchen. It's a month-to-month rental.

The neighborhood's partially (totally?) a hipster scene, but the beauty of it to me is that it's very walkable. The only downside to it that I can think of is that it's becoming homogenized... Starbucks, Cold Stone Creamery, Peet's and Ben and Jerry's and Hollywood Video rub shoulders with local stores.

I'm sure I'll be able to report more bad stuff after I move in! Apparently, the upstairs neighbor is hanging by a thread and one more noise complaint will get her evicted. Fine, let me be the target of her vendetta.

4 blocks to a Fred Meyer's, 3 blocks to a movie theatre, 5-minute walk to a library, 15-minute bus ride to downtown, etc. etc.

Oh, did I mention that this is the first time I'll be living by myself since 1977?

Helen's at the back door making the same sound she makes when she's carrying around the catnip toy, a low, moaning meow that sounds like she's in pain.

I look out the kitchen window and she's got a furry thing in her mouth. It's a dead chipmunk. Ew.
