We're here, in the Holiday Inn we scored for 50bucks/night. It's a decent room with free WiFi, like everwhere else in Portland except Starbucks.

Last night we went to a little Frenchy restaurant called Le Happy. It had a cool atmosphere, great drinks, great salads, and way-too-salty crêpes. Otherwise, we spent the day in bed relaxing. I needed a bit of recovery from the plane trip. Paco slept through most of it, but I spent most of the ride trying to figure out a position I could sleep in. So I napped, etc.

Oh, and after dinner we went to the Eagle, to check out the "Best Basket" (weaving?) contest. We got about 2 feet in the door when we were stopped by a wall of cigarette smoke. When, oh when, will Portland enact a smoking ban in bars? Please, oh please, let it be before June. We had to turn around and walk out.

So Portland had a little sun yesterday, apparently the first in about 3 weeks. Today is back to grey and rainy, but it's a misty-dewy sort of rain that I can tolerate.

You would think that people who work in bars would rise up and protest the damage that second-hand smoke does to their lungs.

They do have great breakfast there. Go for brunch on Sunday, but be prepared to wait for a table!

wow... I'm surprised the pdx hasn't banned smoking in bars. I thought they had a while ago. Bummer.

No, it was still going strong when we were there in November

That's too bad, I would have thought Portland would be hipper than that. Somewhere like New Orleans I'd expect it, but not someplace like Portland :P

I was hoping, actually. Portland is FULL of smokers, despite being hip.

I spose they think it is a part of their hipness. Lordy, I hope smoking isn't the new non-smoking :P

Unfortunately my partner still smokes, and it actually makes it more convenient when we're up there. I hope they pass a ban soon!

my partner smokes too, but he hates bars where you can smoke. Being here in CA he's gotten totally used to going outside for a cig, and enjoys not coming home all smokey.

That's why I'm very happy with the ban here in California. I hate coming back with my clothes smelling like a tobacco factory!

Portland apparently does have a "No-Smoking" policy in restaurants.

BTW, I added you to my list. Hope you don't mind.

You Can Still Smoke in PDX?

I'm so used to the smoking ban here, I never even questioned whether or not Portland had one! I will be moving there soon and I hate cigarette smoke! It's so nice in NYC to go out and not have stanky hair and clothes the next day. Well, at least not cigarette stank!

I remember the Eagle well! Bears and cowboys and urine, oh my! Is the Silverado still open? I can't wait to get back to Portland!

Where else have you eaten? Montage under the Morrison? bridge is rather nice and cheap.

Yeah, the Silver Dildo (Silverado) is still around. When are you moving here?

See You in April

I'm shooting for the spring. I have to sell a house here, pack all my crap, evict my Portland tenants, get my old job back (please, God if you're listening) and go! I've had a belly full of New York. Nothing spells happy like Manhattan in my rearview mirror. There are elements and people I will miss here, but I sure won't miss poverty!

The Eagle can occasionally be fun, but is usually just freaky (and always smoky). When bconn and I were there over the long New Years' weekend (visiting my friends John and Karl, a drag queen was whipping and being whipped by some sad leatherguys as part of a benefit of some sort. Scandals (just down the street from the Eagle), and CC Slaughter's and The Dirty Duck (when they are having bear events) are nicer places.

Let me know if you and Paco want an introduction to John and Karl. I think you guys would enjoy hanging out together. John is 'howieebear' and Karl is 'rangerrob' on Bear 411.
