Roll with it
Sep. 6th, 2007 06:04 amI take the Max, Portland's light rail, to work every day. Yesterday, halfway to the station, which is about 2 blocks from my apartment, I noticed I was walking funny, and looked down to realize that I was wearing one dress shoe and one tennis shoe.
I rushed back to my apartment... thinking I could still make it to work on time, having factored in about 15 minutes of slack. I ran upstairs and put on the other dress shoe, and grabbed the houseplant I was going to take to work but had forgotten in the morning rush.
I ran down the stairs and out the door and down the block and got to the steps leading down to the Max platform. I rushed down one flight of stairs and then caught the toe of my dress shoe on one of the steps. I tumbled down one flight of steps to the next landing.
Forty-eight years of falling experience taught me to roll, and I got up without apparent injuries. There was only one witness to my clumsiness, a rather handsome bearded man descending the stairs after me. I said "that was the most spectacular fall I've done in a while," and proceeded gingerly but quickly down to the platform.
The houseplant was fine, my clothes were not scraped off me, and I got to work on time. I have some bruising on my hip, is all.
