Hat in Progress

Cable Entrelac Hat WIP Top View

Cable Entrelac Hat WIP Side View

This is a hat I'm knitting of my own design. It is a simpler version of the last hat I posted on [livejournal.com profile] fuzzyjay (which I lost on the Portland MAX... sniff.) The technique is entrelac, tarted up with cables. The idea is to create cables that appear to be continuous loops interlacing with each other like a Celtic knot.

The hat is knitted without seams and from the top down. The technique of entrelac means that you turn the work a lot. Each square is 7 knit stitches and 3 cable stitches, and 7 garter ridges.

I have learned a few things from making it, which will improve the next one I make.

I will have to knit it two or three times before I'm satisfied with the results enough to write a pattern for it.

This time I made it out of Brunswick Superwash wool. The last one I knitted was made with Wool-Ease, which, though only 25% wool and 75% acrylic, was itchy as hell. This yarn isn't as itchy. I'm going to throw it in the wash after I'm done. I hope that will even out the stitches a little.

I'm going to scan the diagram I used to construct it, and post it to [livejournal.com profile] knittingcomplex so you can check it out if you wish.

Happy Valentine's Day, everybody.

WOW!

That's quite neat! I look forward to seeing the pattern and finding out just how it is made.

Would you consider selling a hat with this particular pattern to me? I like it a lot but I am not sure if you only knit them for your own use.

I prefer to barter knitting or give it away. There's no way I could sell the knitting and make more than ten cents an hour.

If you have a craft, or any activity that takes a lot of time, we could trade. I don't think knitting is equivalent to something that you give your full attention to, so I would trade it for something that either takes less time or is an activity of a similarly multitasking nature.... Does that make sense?

It makes perfect sense. I will think of something I could barter for a hat and will let you know. Thank you for giving me that option.

I had heard of that show. I want to see it! I will be heading to NYC before it closes.

I found you from a friend on my friend's list...

AnyWays...

I'm JUST learning how to knit.

The top picture. AT first I thought it was a ball of yarn and wanted, no needed, to know just HOW you did it!! They after looking a bit I've decided that it was the top of the hat.

Am I right? (about it being the top I mean...)

Either way I'm excited to see the diagram and I thank you for sharing.

Yep, it's the top of a hat!

It took me a long time after I started knitting to be able to see the way knitting is made. At this point, I can "read" just about any fabric and figure out how to make it.

That is so cool.

I couple of weeks ago I found a basketweave scarf at a yarn store. I asked how it was made and was told I could pay forty bucks to take a class. I just sort of said no thank you and went home to figure it out by myself. I'm almost done with my basketweave scarf now!

That is a very cool hat and years beyond anything I could even try to do yet.

Yay you! My fascination with knitting started with an afghan my great-aunt made. It had panels that included a basket-weave, and also a cable. The cable was intriguing. I couldn't quite figure out how it was made.

Awesome hat! Great color! I love the cable with the entrelac squares - what a great idea. I also knit, but I've not tried entrelac. My knitting blog is here: http://blitheringknitiot.typepad.com/ I don't knit as often as I like, especially now when I'm in the throws of directing a high school musical. At the moment I only have 2 WIPs...

I love finding other guys who knit! Excellent job!
