While looking for it I discovered he died earlier this year.
I saw the documentary (the whole of which is on Youtube) a while back and was moved not just by him but by his mother.

I used to do crude echolocation when I was a kid. Navigating through a dark room by whistling and listening.

We probably all do just a bit. The blind probably develop that skill a lot more. For instance, open the door to a room you've never been in before. It's pitch black and you can see absolutely nothing. But calling in "hello" might give you an idea of the size of the room. Maybe that'd different from echolocation, but I think that we do use sound to ascertain terrain in some manner.
