Portlandiana

We got into Portland around 1 o'clock on Saturday. Portland has a great public transportation system, so we hopped on the light rail at the airport, and could have ridden it downtown with no problem. However, our hotel isn't on the rail line, so we got off at the convention center and called a cab.

We arrived at the Jupiter Hotel, a motel renovated to the extreme of hipness, to see if our room was ready. The manager asked us a couple of times if we were sure we wanted two queen size beds. Hey, are we that obvious? But we are exes now, so we did want two.

The room wasn't quite ready. The manager assured us it would be ready in 15 minutes, so, to kill time, David suggested a trip to the bathhouse, which was a "5-minute" walk. OK, passing not one but 2 soft-drink bottling plants, and 20 minutes later, we came to the Steam bathhouse. We went inside to check out rates. Dave enjoyed the facilities last time he was in Portland and had a great time. The outside is landscaped nicely, and the inside (at least the lobby) looked good. I may or may not try it out. It's been 20 years or so since I last went to a bath house, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, so maybe I'm due.

We walked back to the motel, and got our room key. Our room is big, but there was very little room to put our clothes. There's a tiny two-drawer chest under the TV, and a metal rack to hang things, but there's no closet or large dresser.

I tried to lie down for a minute for a disco nap, and I did drowse off. Dave was busy arranging possible rendezvous on the laptop, and was too jazzed up to take a nap. "Just close your eyes for 10 minutes" I pleaded, knowing how cranky he gets when he's tired. But no, he was too anxious to sleep, or even lie down.

We walked into Portland via the Burnside bridge, and started to look for a place to eat. While wandering around, we found a Whole Foods, where I picked up a luscious organic nectarine (probably the best stone fruit I've ever bought in a supermarket.)

A really hot guy walked by and Dave went "mmmm-hmmm!" loud enough for him to hear. The guy turned back and smiled and Dave chatted him up while I checked out my fruit. I guess we were both doing that. Hyuk, hyuk.

We ran into the guy outside the store and Dave made plans to meet him at 8 at the Eagle.

We wandered round for a while looking for a place to eat. I saw a likely Mexican place, and we had some delicious carnitas burritos. This is something I like to try at every Mexican food place I go to, and this is probably second on my list of great carnitas restaurants. The carnitas at Baja's in Orange, CT is unrivaled in my experience.

So at around 8 we parted company at Powell's Book Store where I wanted to hang out for a while. Dave went on to the Eagle to meet Mr. Hotty.

I combed through the knitting section at Powell's. It was decent, but most bigger knitting stores have more. I have to say, though, there was one book on knitting technique, translated from the German, that was full of cool stuff I've never seen before. That's rare.

Anyway, at 9 I went to the Eagle. There were about 15 guys there, none of whom would make me drop my pants (who are you kidding, my internal [livejournal.com profile] danbearnyc says). There's a sort of loft-balcony in the bar that overlooks the main floor. I climbed the stairs and there's Dave making all nice with the hottie.

Turns out the hottie is a hard-core dom, with many slaves that he likes to spit on and humiliate. Not Dave's scene... so, apart from getting said hottie to take his shirt off and display his impressive furry chest, their flirtation went no further... but it could be the start of a friendship, who knows.

More bars, a few more drinks and we were spent. Walked home and collapsed well before midnight.

So that was Saturday. I will post about Sunday and Monday a little later.
