Boycotts

Do you participate in any boycotts? If so, which ones and why? If not, why not?

Since I started listening to Karmabanque Radio I have boycotted Coca-cola.

For a long time now, I've avoided (not always successfully) Exxon and Mobil. There's a million reasons not to buy gas there. Here's one reason to boycott them.

Same reason we already don't buy their gas.

What is interesting is all the funds that have DP benefits for their employees not voting to reinstate them at ExMo.

I'm with you on the Exxon mobile. Haven't bought their gas for years, and counting. My car could be running out on fumes, and I stroll by without hesitation, lol. It's mostly due to their attitudes on the environment. Not to mention this years price gouging that earned them record $$$ when we had to pay extremely high gas prices.

I always thought living in the South left one with enough reasons to boycott Coke....but that doesn't seem to be the case.

And now Morrissey tells me I need to boycott Canada (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/06-03/27.shtml), and when Jésus speaks...

My Boycott

I decided recently not to spend any of my money in Nebraska. I feel guilty not visiting the folks, (I didn't want to anyway), but it's a place that has made itself so inhospitable to gays and lesbian people - and to all women - that I decided I will not spend my money there. As far as I can I will not travel, eat or buy there.

I thought about scanning the news and reviews for more states to boycott; cities to reject; companies to spurn. But I can't right now. For me, I'll reject Nebraska.

Oh - but now I guess I need to research these three!

Well....don't dwelve too deep in Alabama then; lest you find all the press from a few years back when some politician was trying to ban *any* literature presenting "homosexual life in a positive light" from *all* libraries -- public and college alike.

Plus the fact that their same-sex marriage ban passed with little-to-no resistance.

etc.
etc.
etc.

Not much chance of me going to Alabama.

But thanks for the heads up just the same!

Personally - I refuse to set foot or spend money in the state of Texas.

Why? A legal system and a legislature stuck in the Dark Ages. Idiot voters who preferred Shrub over Ann Richards, setting the Boy Moron up to be Prez'det. And then there's Enron, Tom Delay, and a whole host of other repellentcans.

They had to be spanked by the Supreme Court to finally get rid of their sodomy law - and they still make it a felony to own too many sex toys.

WalMart

I don't mind boycotting them because they have shit for sale anyways.

But why do you boycott them? I can think of a number of reasons, but I was curious about yours.

Poor quality goods.
Destruction of fair market by unfair pricing that drives competition out of the market place.
Stores are hideously designed to fit into the locale of the areas they move into (e.g. WalMart refused to make modifications for a store in Williamsburg Virginia. That city has very strict requirements about how buildings look due to the Colonial district. Signs are only allowed to be a certain size and color palette (white and green I think). Walmart got even though, they just put the store outside Williamsburg's city limits in James City County).
Theft of overtime from managers on their employees (including managers).
Use of illegal aliens and then locking them into the stores.
I could go on and on, but these are the ones just off the top of my head.

I detest Wal*Mart too - but there isn't one near where I live, so saying I "boycott" them would be somewhat dishonest. I make an effort to patronize companies like Costco that treat their employees like humans.

I tend not to *technically* boycott things, although I am usually lucky enough to have choice. I don't shop in Wal Mart because of all the things listed in Kim's reply, and I will try to help out "the little guy", but only if his product is superior, or his goods are reasonably priced.

For example, I won't buy from a seller just because it's a gay-owned organisation. I'll buy if it's of quality, and the price is reasonable. I'll pay a little extra, but not a huge amount.

What does bother me is that all the mom and pop shops are being thrown out, not by larger chain stores, but landlords that want to jack the rent to bring in the chain stores. Soon all the suburbs in the US will be identical, save a small local variance, but still owned by the same mega corp.

I shouldn't rant when I am tired.

I hope you're well.
