Honeycrisp® apples are great. I just finished a ripe one.

Now I feel vindicated. I just found out that one of my favorite apples is the "mother" of this apple. Yes, the apple that nobody has ever heard of but me, the crispest, most delicious apple that only is in season (gets mushy quickly) for one month in New England, the mother of the incredible Honeycrisp® apple, the Macoun.

Of the Macoun: "The skin is a dark red with a purplish flush. Its very firm flesh is juicy and snow white, tasting sweet with a hint of berry."

Honeycrisp is my favorite variety, and allanh's, too; when we went food shopping on Sunday, we both simultaneously spotted a Honeycrisp display and fell on it like hungry wolves.

I'm not sure how frequently they can be found on the west coast, but on the east coast they were a relatively rare treat.

Honeycrisp are usually in stock at the markets I go to. Usually they're quite expensive. $2.49/lb. is typical.
